Greyhound is a fussy eater!?

I have had my 3 year old greyhound for 2 weeks now. Shes an ex-racer and I’m trying to wean her off her old diet of raw meat, eggs and bread. I’d prefer to feed her a good quality dry food, but she hardly touches it. I’ve tried several brands, mixed it with raw meat, tinned dog food or gravy but shes just picks out the bits she likes and leaves the rest. Shes not even a great lover of dog treats and seems to prefer not to chew! Has anyone got any suggestions? Is tinned food really as bad for her as I think it is? Any advice appreciated!

Mixing it up with tinned food, cooked mince and an egg, shes now eating in the evenings. It still doesn’t seem enough but its a good start! Will try her on the Ultra next and get her checked again by the vet if things don ‘t improve

It is good that you are weening her off this diet, unless you are buying organic products, all of the extra hormones and preservatives could harm her. I recommend trying Ultra dog food. It is an all natural dog food and gentle on their sensitive tummies. My greyhound’s vet, (who used to be a vet at a greyhound track), recommends this brand as well.

When you try to add gravy, do you mix it all up, or just add some on the top. Try to add a little extra gravy so all the dog food pieces have a little gravy on them. It is very common for greyhounds to pick out pieces of food that they like.

Furthermore, during changes in weather, (changing of the seasons), it is also common for greyhounds to not eat that much. But they do start eating regularly again.

Greyhounds are very sensitive, and go through a lot during their racing life. It could be that she is still nervous about her new home. Under stressful/new situations, it is very common for greyhounds not to eat much. She will eat when she is hungry. She won’t let herself starve to death. However, if you find that she is still not eating, normally, (usually about 2-3 cups of food twice a day), be sure to call your vet. There could be other health issues going on that you are unaware of.
