How do you clean really old farm toys?
They are rusty and would like to clean them up a little before I sell them. Any ideas? I don’t want to ruin them.
You have 2 options when dealing with old toys. One would be to let the new owners of the toys clean them themselves. That way the idea of “ruining” them is in their hands and not yours. Even with rust, if you know the potential amount you can get for the toys in their present condition, it is better to leave them alone. Don’t let anyone fool you into thinking that if they are rusty…they are worthless and you should basically give them away. OR, you can buy some Naval Jelly at your local hardware store and using a soft toothbrush, try removing the rust yourself. Then “ruining” the toys is in your hands and the potential income may increase or decrease depending on what kind of a job you do. Many collectors want toys in the condition that are in without any improvements done. It would be best to test the market to see if there is interest in the toys in their present condition first, before you take on any kind of restoration project on your own.
